Beloved Adelaide bass, Pelham Andrews, joins forces with song specialist and Co-Artistic Director, pianist Penelope Cashman. Well known for his powerful presence on the operatic stage, this is a unique opportunity to experience Andrews’ extraordinary emotional range and poetic sensitivity up close. Together, they will guide audience members through an exquisite musical landscape carefully curated to include settings from composers spanning the breadth of the artsong genre.
The audience will be enveloped by the love, loss, faith and hope of Christina Rossetti’s words set in song by Ned Rorem, John Ireland, Lori Laitman, and others. Then, a fascinating shift into the avant-garde world of James Joyce, mingling the lyricism and drama of his writing with music by three composers including Samuel Barber. Audience members will also be transported to distant lands with the evocative Nordic songs of Grieg and Sibelius and the powerful, folk-inspired melodies of Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály.
Concert goers are invited to make a day of it and arrive early for a leisurely lunch at Coriole's renowned restaurant before immersing themselves in the music. With a glass of wine in hand, this recital is the perfect way to spend a winter afternoon, wrapped in the warmth of sublime music and stunning surroundings.
