Tenzin Choegyal // Whispering Sky with Pocket String Quartet

  • Trinity Sessions 318 Goodwood Road Clarence Park, SA, 5034 Australia (map)

As the son of Tibetan nomads, Tenzin Choegyal feels a particular connection to the music of the high Himalayan plateau. Tenzin Choegyal, Tibetan-Australian artist, composer and Grammy-nominee, channels the wisdom and traditions of his nomadic ancestors in his extraordinary vocal performances and mastery of the lingbu (bamboo flute) and dranyen (3-stringed lute). Forced into exile with his family, he now resides in Australia, continuing to explore new musical horizons while remaining true to his nomadic lineage. Tenzin’s soaring vocals and sublime flute solos have thrilled audiences around the globe. His unique style embraces meditative mantras, joyful folk tunes and spoken word, infused with the essence of Tibetan wisdom and a sound as expansive as the Himalayas. Tenzin takes audiences on a musical journey, transcends cultural boundaries and brings traditional Tibetan sounds into a very contemporary setting. This performance sees Tenzin collaborate with Pocket String Trio, led by Julian Ferraretto.

Tenzin sees music as a universal form of communication without boundaries, “like drifting clouds that fly freely over the man-made geographical borders in this infinite space of possibilities”. For Tenzin music is life, no matter where he is. “My music has evolved through my own journey from Tibet to India to Australia and around the world. But wherever I am in the world, my music also connects me to my homeland of Tibet.” His obvious joyfulness is infectious and his message is uplifting.
