Miles Davis at 100 // UKARIA

  • UKARIA Cultural Centre 119 Williams Road Mount Barker Summit, South Australia, 5251 Australia (map)

Curated by Carl Orr

This year is the centenary of Miles Davis, one of the most innovative musicians and bandleaders of the twentieth century, and artists around the world have been paying homage to him on this important milestone. Doing justice to the legacy of this groundbreaking artist requires serious connections and jazz-chops. Carl Orr has the necessary credentials in fistfuls.

In the 1980s Carl was gigging in Sydney with Jackie Orszaczky and Miroslav Bukovsky. He moved to London in 1995 following a tour with jazz-fusion legend and ‘the world’s greatest drummer’ Billy Cobham, who played a key role on pivotal Davis records like Bitches Brew, Live–Evil and Jack Johnson. Carl was the guitarist for Cobham’s 2017 residency at Ronnie Scott’s in London and has performed with other Davis bandmates including George Duke, Bennie Maupin, and Marcus Miller. Carl’s own multi-year residency at Ronnie Scott’s ran to more than 300 shows.

For this survey of Davis’s work, Carl is joined by a crack band of jazz and fusion artists. The concert moves chronologically before exploring the impact Davis had on artists like Cobham and on Carl’s own output. This tribute to Davis distils how the so-called ‘Prince of Darkness’ and his acolytes have inspired generations of musicians.
