Soundstream is committed to shaping Australian culture through new music via ground-breaking programming, composer collaborations, the commissioning of new works, education and massed community events. Established in 1994 in Adelaide by Artistic Director Gabriella Smart, Soundstream comprises some of Australia’s leading new music practitioners.
Pianist and new music advocate Gabriella Smart was announced as one of three winners of the 2018 Prelude Composers’ Residency. For this residency Gabriella was based at Adelaide's Beaumont House where Soundstream presented a series of events in 2018 as part of its Blue Touch Series: An open workshop in February with composer and sound artist Jesse Budel; March saw Summer Sundays, curated by Gabriella, which included recordings of the garden environment by Jesse Budel, and featured saxophonist Derek Pascoe as the Pied Piper (in partnership with the National Trust); Gabriella performed Inner Cities, a five hour piano cycle for solo piano by Alvin Curran. In July, Soundstream partnered with TURA New Music (WA) and Monash University (VIC) to present the Summers Night Project Concert in Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide.
On a personal level, following a performance with seven other acclaimed pianists at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in August, Gabriella took up a Katowice Residency in Poland, with concerts in Dublin, UK, Amsterdam, Bratislava, and a recording with Radio Frankfurt.
