Creative Development

Chamber Music Adelaide is delighted to announce the participating ensembles in its 2023 Space to Create Creative Development Program. Space to Create is a pilot program which aims to support ensembles to nurture and grow seedling ideas through experimentation and play.

Our 2023 Space to Create Ensembles are:

Opal Guitar Quartet

The Opal Guitar Quartet are emerging as an ensemble to watch in South Australia. Made up of 4 outstanding guitarists with international performance credits, these artists will spend time workshopping a new program of guitar works, including the development of 2 new works for guitar by their members James Rawley and Caleb Lavery-Brook which will be premiered at On The Terrace 2023 on Sunday 19 November. The Quartet will present their new programs of work as part of a full 60 minute concert in early 2024.

Jodie O’Regan with Windsong Quintet, Andrew Wiering and Emlyn O’Regan

Creative Development and recording of a new work Night Whales, by Jodie O’Regan. This will fund workshops to experiment, record and adapt the existing movement and begin development of two future movements of the work.

4EPQ

4EPQ are a string quartet who have been performing together for several years and are now developing their profile and name. Their project will focus on their repertoire choice and will include rehearsal time to develop a catalogue of string quartet works which draw upon or are inspired by folk music traditions. This includes works by Bartok and Smetana, as well as newer works by composers such as Peteris Vasks, Jessie Montgomery and Reena Esmail. Three of these works will be performed as part of On The Terrace 2023 with more performances planned for 2024 and beyond.

Emily Tulloch, Maryam Rahmani and Caoimhe Collins

This new ensemble will spend time incorporating elements of improvisatory techniques, folk music, traditions from Iran and Ireland, alongside a sound chamber music aesthetic drawn from the Western classical tradition.

Penny Cashman with Bethany Hill

Creative development to rehearse, workshop, perform and record a new recital program “And the Earth Turns”. This program takes a semi-cyclical form with songs spanning several centuries, 5 languages, and varied compositional styles, all carefully selected and brought together in a powerful and cohesive experience. The aim is to represent one turn of the Earth, beginning with dawn and spanning one day and night, using songs depicting natural, human, and mystical elements. As a new component of the recital format, they will experiment with incorporating spoken recitation into the recital. Following this, the musicians will reflect on the project and explore unrecorded Australian art song repertoire, creating a new program, drawing on feedback from “And the Earth Turns” audience.

“we’re incredibly grateful for the support. Not only did the Space to Create grant supported us to create "And the Earth Turns", it led us to take daring and successful creative steps that we might not otherwise have taken. The funding also allowed us to film our recent performances, giving us the chance to learn the most we can from our performances and create promotional material. Also thanks Chamber Music Adelaide's Space to Create, we were able to invest in scores for Australian art songs that we’ve always wanted to explore but haven't been able to access. The seeds of our next project, and perhaps many more, lie here! It just goes to show the value of supporting the often hidden creative process, as much as performances themselves. “
