The Unknown Swimmer // Kevin March and Judith Dodsworth

  • UKARIA 119 Williams Road Mount Barker Summit, SA, 5251 Australia (map)

A new immersive song cycle/chamber opera by Kevin March and Judith Dodsworth

The Unknown Swimmer, in development at UKARIA in January 2024, brings together the music of award-winning composer Kevin March and the words of soprano/poet Judith Dodsworth. Coupled with stunning visuals and digital environments by photographer Jason Reekie and Justin Gardam, in this exciting new work cold-water swimming becomes a metaphor for transformation and healing. Universal in its scope and also deeply intimate, The Unknown Swimmer resonates through its powerful imagery and evocate score for soprano/speaker, flute, cello and percussion. In this exclusive preview, we invite audiences to witness the work in progress and to reflect on their own experiences of adversity and transcendence in a challenging post-pandemic world.

Attendance is free, but bookings (via the link below) are essential.

Versatile soprano Judith Dodsworth is becoming familiar to UKARIA audiences through a number of memorable performances in both the 2023 edition of Chamber Landscapes at Adelaide Festival and Anthony Marwood's recent UKARIA 24. Works performed include Pierre Boulez's seminal Le Marteau sans maître and the Australian premieres of Outi Tarkiainen's Naarasäiti (The Lustful Mother) with the Australian String Quartet and Schwester Tod by Jörg Widmann. Judith returns to the Adelaide Festival in March 2024 to perform Is this the gate by Nicholas Lens.
